This afternoon, dear Mr Macdonald, three of the Council met, viz Mr Panton, Mr Gordon
and myself. We unanimously agreed on the request of Mr Favenc, who attended:
1
George Gordon.
1, to supply (on his written request) also to a written recommendation, that Mr Cuthbertson
had carried out the
survey-work
during the Society's Expedition to Mt Obree
with ability, and a letter to that effect was at once given to Mr Favenc.
2
Papua New Guinea.
2, that our Branch would give a
subsidy of £100 to Mr Favenc
himself
for his expedition on a clear understanding, that
he
(
not we
) should make all arrangements with Mr Cuthbertson, and that
at once
after Mr F. return the principle geographic results of the expedition with sketch-map
should be communicated
by Mr Favenc
to us
as well as a share of mineral-specimens and any other collections formed, and that
the Vict branch
should not
be held liable
for any other payments
whatsoever
.

See E. Favenc to M, 27 December 1887. Favenc spent several months commencing in March 1888 exploring the upper reaches
of the Gascoyne and Ashburton Rivers, WA. His report was published in the Proceedings of the Royal Geographical Society, London, rather than in those of the Royal Geographical
Society of Australasia; see Favenc (1889). Cuthbertson accompanied the expedition
as surveyor; no sketch map has been found.
Regardfully your
Ferd. von Mueller.
