The Syncarpia, as you surmised, dear Mr Deane, is S. leptopetala;
its occurrence so far S. is very remarkable, and shall be recorded under your honored
name. The new sending of Tillaea makes it approach nearer T. macrantha; but as I cannot
now enter on a critical study of the forms allied to each other, I would advise to
keep the subject in abeyance, til I shall have in Oct. brought the "Key I" (now in
print) through the press.

MS annotation by M: 'Could ripe fruit of this Syncarpia be got? I never had any'.

It was more than a year before B88.11.02 was issued.
Let me hope, that you will be one of the explorers of Mt Seaview
about Christmas and New Year. It will not cost more there in time and in exertions
than any other holiday tour; indeed I look on it as a picknic on a large scale. Such
an excursion, (for which the track could be easily cut, as the Mt is near settlements
of the Hastings
valley) would be fruitful also to geology, as well as entomology and some other branches
of zoology; a good set of bearings would be obtained and also the real height (much
overrated, it seems) be ascertained

A letter to the Inspector of police at Mt Hastings would bring full advise.
