Es wird Ihnen bekannt sein, geehrter Herr Stephani, dass sowohl in München als in Belgien ein einfacher Index der Pflanzen Genera in Bearbeitung ist, gestützt auf Benthams & J. Hookers Genera. Da es nun aber doch sehr wichtig ist, dass auch die Cryptogamen in diesem Index von den besten Meistern der Neu-Zeit Berücksichtigung finden, so möchte ich Ihnen besonders rathen für eins dieser Werke, welche für jeden Botaniker nöthig sein werden, die Namen der gültigen Genera der
Jungermanniaceae

) zu ordnen mit Unterfügung der Sectionsnamen u. ungültigen genera richtigster Stellung.
Ich wende mich gleichzeitig an meine Freunde Agardh, Cooke, Geheeb, J. Mueller, bittend in demselben Sinne zu wirken. Wir brauchen für unsere Sammlungen u. namentlich Museen solche Indices besonders, die ja separat auch erscheinen könnten.

Je conservativer der Index gehalten wird, um so nützlicher wird er sein. Später sollten dem Index ein Suppl. zu B. & H. folgen.

It will be known to you, esteemed Mr Stephani, that both in Munich as well as in Belgium a simple index of plant genera is in preparation, based on Bentham's & Hooker's Genera.

Bentham & Hooker (1862-83). Durand (1888) included a section on Sapotaceae prepared by Radlkofer from Munich. The volume did not include cryptogamic genera.
Nevertheless, since it is now very important that the Cryptogams also find consideration by the best masters of modern times in this index, I should like to recommend you particularly for one of these tasks that will be needed by every botanist, to arrange the names of the valid genera of the
Jungermanniaceae

) placed under the section names and with invalid genera in the most correct position.
I am at the same time consulting my friends Agardh, Cooke, Geheeb and J. Müller,

asking them to work in the same sense. We need such indices which could certainly also be published separately, particularly for our collections and especially museums.

The more conservative the index is kept, the more useful it will be. Later a supplement to Bentham & Hooker should follow.
