3/10/86
You will have been surprised, dear Mr Mitten, that I never did acknowledge your last return-sending of Mosses; but when I say, that the parcel, on which the date of receipt at Kew is marked 30/10/83, arrived here only last week (24/9/86), your wondering at my taciturnity will cease.
In a great national establishment, such as that of Kew, things of course, may easily be mislaid, and I do not write to blame any one, but to exonerate myself from neglect towards you. Simultaneously came a parcel of Algs from Prof Eaton, which was received in 1879, of the presenting of which to my Department I became not aware til now, and which therefore only now I can acknowledge.
Allow me to ask you, whether you are still kindly inclined, to give also to me your inestimable favor as in former years[,] for my Department to examine Mosses, such as successively are here secured. If so, I will at once resume my sendings to you.
Let me hope, dear Mr Mitten, that you are enjoying health and strenght, and that thus you will be able yet for a long time, to continue your highly important researches!
Regardfully
your
Ferd. von Mueller.
