Let me thank you, dear Dr Hector, for the copy of your splendid Report on N.Z. Ichthyology as regards utilitarian purposes.

I have handed it to the Chairman of the antarctic Committee, and it strengthens my proposition that a summer-tour should be made to Macquarie-Island with the view of prearranging for an antarctic Expedition-Depot there. You may have seen, what I said about the antarctic Islands for occupation in my Presidential adress at the geogr. Soc here in January last.

I was since some years aware, that a existed on your Beech-trees from hearsay, but could never get a specimen; but Mr Buchanan has now described it.
