Notwithstanding M's clearly written date, MS is annotated: '28.10.85 | 823 | Baron
Von Mueller | Re Mr Maiden & acknowledging plants'.
Have mercy with me, dear Sir Edward — I hope to be able to write you a
long
letter in a few days, but am just dreadfully worried in the Department.
I had the pleasure, to meet poor Mr Maiden; how sad his sufferings!
He kindly brought the plants from Thursday-Island,
and I will soon attend to them.

Joseph Henry Maiden was intermittently ill for much of the second half of 1885, probably
suffering from typhoid fever. In October he was well enough to travel to Melbourne,
when he delivered to M the plants collected on Thursday Island by W. Bäuerlen.
