Sie werden sich gewundert haben, geehrter Herr Tepper, dass ich Ihr Schreiben so lange unbeantwortet liess, zumal da Sie mir in einer so grossmüthiger Weise die Normal-Exemplare von ceen u von -Arten des Hr. Arthur Bennett sandten. Freilich erhielt ich das schöne Packet erst vor wenigen Tagen, nachdem ich mehrmals desswegen nach Melbourne sandte; ich selbst lebe in einer Vorstatd (South Yarra).

Solche Exemplare aus der Hand eines gediegenen Specialisten haben bleibenden Werth, u werden noch durch Jahrhunderte in den von mir begründete phytologischen Museum als Vorlagen für critische Studien nützen, so wie auch alle Ihre Pflanzen von York's Peninsula &c, wo wohl manche Art durch Überwucherung und Abweidung in späteren Zeiten ganz aussterben wird. Also auch für die Geographie der Planzen sind solche Sammlungen aus den ersten Colonisations Zeiten von hohem Werth.

Aus diesem Grunde treibe ich auch immer an, dass Leute im Innere sammeln, so dass man die geographische Verbreitung der Arten zeitig genau verfolgen kann in ihrer Ursprünglichkeit .

Sollten Sie irgend Jemand im Fernen Innere kennen, u zum Sammeln ermuthigen können, jetzt gerade in der Frühlings-Zeit so würde ich sehr dankbar sein, u dann könnte ja auch Ihnen noch wieder eine neue Art gewidment werden.

Unter der allerkleinsten Annuellen sollte sich gewiss noch manches Neue finden, z. B. in der Nähe von Silberton, wo ja 3 Colonien fast zusammenstossen. Haben Sie je Samen von der erst blattlosen gesehen?

u sollten besonders im Fernen Innere von Freunden in allen Stadien gesammelt werden; das gäbe Ihnen auch gutes Material für den ausgezeichneten Mr Bennett, mit dem ich selbst über correspondirt habe, obwohl ich über ceen nach der grossen Alex Braun's Tode mit Dr Nordstedt in Verbindung bin.

Sollte ich Ihnen nicht viel schreiben können in den nächsten Monaten, so werden Sie freundlichst berücksichtigen, dass ich 3 Werke in der Presse habe

1, eine erweiterte Ausgabe der "select plants".

2, eine Monographie der Myoporinen mit 80 Lithogrammen in Quart.

3. einen "Key" to the syst of Vict Plants with 200 Holzschnitten.

Dazu stürmen noch viel Geschäfte wegen der Neu-Guinea Expedition auf mich ein, und auch die Colonial Austellung in London häuft auf mich grosse Extra Obliegenheiten in diesem Jahre. Ich habe aber schon mancherlei zurecht für das 3te Suppl des Census für nächsten Januar aber hoffe noch auf recht tüchtiges Mitwirken im Innere um noch sehr viel mehr Material zu erlangen in Post in successiven kleinen Packeten aus viele Orten.

You will have wondered, esteemed Mr Tepper, that I have left your letter so long unanswered, especially since you sent me in such a magnanimous manner the normal specimens of and of species of Mr Arthur Bennett. Admittedly I received the fine parcel only a few days ago, after I sent several times to Melbourne for it; I myself live in a suburb (South Yarra).

Such specimens from the hand of a genuine specialist have lasting value and will still be used through centuries , in the phytological museum founded by me, as models for critical studies, as also will all your plants from Yorke Peninsula

&c, where probably some species will become completely extinct through overgrowing and grazing in later times. Therefore such collections from the first period of colonization are also of high value for the geography of plants.

For this reason I am also always urging that people in the interior collect, so that we can follow the geographical distribution of species early enough in their originality .

Should you know anyone in the far interior and can encourage them to collecting just now in the springtime, I should be very grateful , and then a new species could indeed also be dedicated to you again.

Surely many new things should still be found among the very smallest annuals , e.g. in the vicinity of Silberton,

Silverton, NSW.

where indeed three colonies almost meet. Have you ever seen seed of the first leafless ?

and should be collected particularly in the far interior by friends in all stages; that would also give you good material for the excellent Mr Bennett with whom I have corresponded myself on ,

No MS letters between Bennett and M have been found, but see M to A. Bennett, 1887 (in this edition as 87-00-00o).

although I am in contact with Dr Nordstedt about after the death of the great Alex Braun.

Should I not be able to write much to you in the next months, you will most kindly consider that I have three works in press:

1. an enlarged edition of the Select plants.

In addition still much business on account of the New Guinea expedition

The expedition to New Guinea organized by the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia.

bombards me, and also the colonial exhibition in London

piles up extra obligations on me this year. I have, however, already several things in good order for the third supplement of the Census for next year,
