Da es scheint, geehrter Herr Möller, dass sich nicht leicht dort ein Verleger für eine portugiesische Ausgabe meiner "Select plants" durch eine Übersetzung von Ihnen finden lässt, so möchte ich Ihnen rathen die Hülfe des Viconde

Visconde?

Allen in Oporto anzurufen, der Selbiger vor Jahren eine Übersetzung des Werkes für seine Agricultur Zeitung wünschte. Vielleicht liesse es sich so einrichten dass das Werk in doppelten Sätzen auf jeder Seite gedruckt würde; dann könnte die Übersetzung erst stückweise in dem Journal erscheinen, und aus den Spalten desselben könnten die fertigen Typen bogenweise zusammengesetzt und abgedruckt werden. In dem Falle könnte der Vicomte vielleicht das Ganze übernehmen die Druckkosten und den ganzen Vortheil des Verkaufs der Buch-Exemplare haben, von welchen gewiss eine bedeutende Zahl sich in Brasilien verkaufen liessen, wo ein so einflussreicher Mann wie der Viconde Allen gewiss litteratische Verbindungen hat. Meine Bezahlung des Übersetzens (£25) ist doch eine schöne Hülfe, wofür mir eine Anzahl Frei-Exemplare zukommen sollten. Aber meine Privat Mittel erlauben mir nicht zu den Kosten des Druckes beizutragen Dass Hr. Dr. Goeze Ihnen die vortreffliche Deutsche Übersetzung des Werkes nicht schickte, erklärt sich ja schon durch die Geld Ausgabe. Er is ja nicht wohlhabend, und hat mehrende geldliche Obliegenheiten beim Aufwuchs seiner jungen Familie, und da es ja so ungewiss scheint, überhaupt einen Verleger zu finden für Ihre Übersetzung, so hat er die Ausgabe für das Buch in Cassel wohl sparen wollen.

As it seems, respected Mr Möller, that a publisher there for a Portuguese edition of my Select plants through a translation is not going to be easily found by you, I should like to suggest to you to call on the assistance of Viscount Allen in Oporto, who years ago desired a translation of the work for his agricultural journal.

No such expression of interest has been found from Alfredo Allen (Visconde de Vilar de Allen from 1866), who was involved with the Jornal da Sociedade Agricola do Porto. See M to A. Möller, 12 July 1883.

Perhaps it could be so arranged that the work was printed in double columns on each page; then the translation could appear firstly in parts in the journal, and the complete type from the columns could be put together in sheets and printed. In that case the Vicomte could perhaps undertake the whole of the printing costs and have the whole benefit of the sale of the copies of the book, of which undoubtedly a considerable number would be sold in Brazil, where such an influential man as Viscount Allen certainly has literary connections.

M had offered £20 in M to A. Möller, 12 July 1883.

is indeed a splendid assistance, for which a number of free copies should be due to me. However, my private means do not allow me to contribute to the cost of printing. That Dr Goeze did not send you the excellent German translation of the work is certainly explained by the expense. He is indeed not well off and has several monetary obligations with the growing up of his young family, and since it does seem so uncertain really of finding a publisher for your translation, he has probably wished to save the expense for the book in Cassel.
