When transcribed, the MS was bound in Hooker's interleaved copy of Bentham & Hooker (1862-83), vol. 3, part 2, issued in 1883, between pp. 830 and 831, i.e. within the treatment of the Liliaceae, not the Orchidaceae where it would have been better placed. When called up to enable the transcription to be checked, the volume could not be found.
MS annotation in pencil: 'Shown to Mr Bentham'.
The item is dated to April 1882 as the earliest date it could have been written, as M evidently became aware in that month of Buchanan's announcement of

It was probably written before M commented on the text of Bentham & Hooker (1862-83), vol. 3, part 2, because in his acknowledgement of a copy (M to J. Hooker, 1 June 1883), he included comments on genera recognised therein, including reiterating that
