Nur wenige Worte, edler Freund, begleiten die Sendung meines Census der Pflanzen Gattungen Australiens. Ich neige mich auch schon dem Alter zu, in dem man nicht mehr correspondirt ohne Zweck, u sollte Ihnen namentlich nicht Ihre kostbare Zeit mit nutzlosen Episteln, rauben. Der Zweck des heutigen Schreibens ist dieser. Für eine neue Ausgabe meiner "select plants" brauche ich kürze Notizen über die Bäume Mexicos, welche in verschiedenen Gegenden Bauholz u. Gerberinde liefern, ich meine das beste u ganz gewöhnliche Material, welches die Handwerker verarbeiten. Ich rief Ihre mächtige Hülfe an, wie eine der ersten Ausgaben erschien, u Sie verwiesen mich an Herrn Professor Barroeta in San Lius de Potosi; jedoch nach Austausch mehrerer Briefe hat diese Anstrengung auch nicht ein einziges Wort der Belehrung eingebracht, obgleich dieser Herr im Schreiben sehr artig war.

Was ist nun zu thun? Darf ich Ihre u Hr Prof Sargent’s Hülfe als die ausgezeichneter Dendrologen anrufen? Sie sind ja so in Tannen, Eichen, Eschen, Nussbäumen u s w interessirt, dass die Sache auch für Sie u ihn gewiss wichtig ist. Einige deutsche Handwerker in den Hauptstädten würden ganz gewiss, wenn Sie darum bäten, Ihnen einige Eichenblätter mit Eicheln u. sw, auch Tannenzweige mit Zapfen u sw senden von solchen Bäumen, welche seit 300 Jähren tagtäglich für Bretter, Bauholz, Gerblohe u. sw verwendet werden, und doch wissen wir über die Baum- Arten insofern technisch noch absolut nichts!

Hoffend dass Sie meinen freien Zutritt zu Ihnen verzeihen werden, zumal da ich jede derartige Hülfe in meinem Werke anerkenne, bleibe ich der Ihre

Kann ich Ihnen oder Ihrer Akademie irgend etwas senden?

Alles aus den höhere Bergegenden Süd Mexicos u alles selbst aus dem Unterlande Nordmexicos könnte in Colonien wie die von Victoria hier cultivirt werden. Jedenfalls wären diese gewünschten Notizen ein lücke-ausfüllender Beitrag zu der Technologie der Pflanzen.

Also, I am already approaching the age in which one no longer corresponds without purpose, and ought not rob you especially of your valuable time with unimportant epistles. The purpose of today's letter is this. For a new edition of my Select plants I need short notes about the trees of Mexico that furnish building timber and tanning bark in various regions.

The next edition edited by M was B85.12.03 and the entries on the oaks contain references to information from Englemann; however, they are not new, having also been included in B81.01.04.

I mean the best and quite common material that craftsmen process. I am calling on your powerful assistance as you referred me, when one of the first editions appeared, to Prof. Barroeta in San Luis de Potosi; however, after the exchange of several letters, this exertion did not bring in even a single word of information, although this gentleman was very courteous in writing.

Now what is to be done? May I call on your help and on Prof. Sargent's, as the outstanding dendrologists? You are so interested in conifers, oaks, ashes, nut trees and so on that the matter certainly is also important to you and him. Some German craftsmen in the principal cities would most certainly, if you asked for them, send you some oak leaves with acorns and so on, also conifer branches with cones and so on, of such trees, which for 300 years, day after day, are being used for boards, building timber, tanning and so on and yet we still know absolutely nothing technically about the tree species , in this respect.

Hoping, especially since I give recognition to all such help in my publications, that you will excuse my direct approach, I remain,

Can I send anything to you or to your academy?

Everything from the higher mountainous regions of southern Mexico and even from the lowland of North-Mexico, could be grown in colonies such as Victoria here. At any rate these requested notes would be a gap-filling contribution to the technology of the plants.
