Zunächst erlauben Sie mir, Eminenz, Ihnen zum Jahreswechsel meine beste Felicitation darzubieten. Möge dies neue Jahr für Sie ein recht frohes und glückliches werden!
Dann habe ich Ihnen meinen besten Dank auszusprechen für die Aufmerksamkeit, mir Ihre vortreffliche Biographie über den edlen Parlatore zu senden. Es ist eine herrliche Schrift, und ich theile ganz die Gefühle Ew. Eminenz über diesen unvergesslichen Gelehrten und biederen Freund, dem auch ich durch eine Reihe mich — wenn auch nur schriftlich — nahen konnte. Dass auch ich der Transmutations Theorie nicht huldige, sondern in der göttlichen Schöpfung etwas viel Höheres erblicke als das Wirken einfacher Naturkräfte, die ja auch von Gott ausgehen, wird Ihnen vielleicht aus meinen Schriften bekannt sein.
Ew. Eminenz sprechen den Wunsch aus, getrocknete austral Pflanzen zu erlangen. Käuflich sind solche hier nicht zu erstehen; denn das theuere Leben in Goldländern, die hohe Fracht nach Europa und dann noch die Transitkosten nach entfernten Inlandstädten sind ganz aus Verhältniss zu dem Werth solcher Sammlungen, so dass niemand hier methodisch dem Sammeln für Pflanzen-Museen obliegt. Dann entsteht auch noch die Schwierigkeit des Benennens, welches bei gar vielen Arten Zergliederung erfordert, und von gewöhnlichen Sammlern nicht ausgeführt werden könnte, während doch unbenannte Pflanzen-Exemplare aus erforschten Regionen nur sehr geringen Werth haben.
Unter diesen Umständen schien es mir am Besten, versuchsweise ein Päckchen getrockneter Pflanzen mit der Post zu senden, und solche zu frankiren. Wenn das ungarische Post-Amt solche Sendungen expedirt, so stände dem billigen Senden zu Ihnen nichts Besonderes im Wege, und ich könnte dann nach und nach eine Menge Pflanzen, so weit es meine Verhältnisse hier erlauben, an Ew. Eminenz befördern. Diesmal sind es nur Eucal[y]pten gewesen, die aber als Belege zu meiner Eucalpytographie besonderes Interesse für Sie haben mögen.
Ich war hoch erfreuet von Sr Hoheit dem Prinzen von Coburg Gotha durch Ew. Eminenz zu hören, und dies erinnert mich lebhaft an die Leutseeligkeit und Güte, welche der Prinz und sein Bruder mir während deren Hiersein 1873 erwiesen. Wenn Sie an Sr. Hoheit demnächst schreiben sollten oder dem Prinzen wieder begegnen, so bitte ich Sie, mich dem gütigen fürdere Andenken Seiner Hoheit mit meinem ehrerbietigen Grusse empfehlen zu wollen. Ob wohl die Eucalyptus-Culturen und die Aussaat der gerbereichen Acacien auf den Inseln bei Istrien zur Ausführung kam, für welche Sr Hoheit besonderres Interesse zeigte, und wofür ich damals Samensendungen, die erneuet werden könnten lieferte?

Firstly allow me, Eminence, to offer my best felicitations for New Year. May this New Year be a very happy and fortunate one for you!
Then I have to express my best thanks to you for the courtesy in sending me your excellent biography of the noble Parlatore.

Haynald (1879). Haynald's memoir was originally published in Hungarian, but M received a copy of the German version that is now in the Library, Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne.
It is a magnificent publication and I share completely your Eminence's feelings about this unforgettable savant and worthy friend, whom I also could approach by turn, even if only in writing. That I also do not subscribe to the Transmutations Theory, but see something much higher in the heavenly creation than the action of simple forces of nature, which certainly also come from God, will perhaps be known to you from my writings.
Your Eminence expresses the wish to get dried Australian plants.

Such are not purchasable here, because the high cost of living in gold countries, the high freight to Europe and then again the transit costs to distant inland cities are quite out of proportion to the value of such collections, so that no one here devotes himself methodically to collecting for plant museums. Then also the difficulty of naming still arises, which requires dissection in very many species, and cannot be carried out by ordinary collectors, while indeed unnamed plant specimens from investigated regions have only very little value.
Under these circumstances it seemed best to me to send a small parcel of dried plants with the post as a trial, and to pay postage on it. If the Hungarian Post Office forwards such consignments, nothing particular would stand in the way of cheap consignments to you, and I could then consign a number of plants to your Eminence now and again as far as my circumstances here permit it. This time there have been only eucalypts, but they may have particular interest for you as records for my Eucalyptographia.

Eucalyptographia was published in Decades, beginning with B79.13.11; seven had been issued by the time this letter was written.
I was very pleased to hear from His Highness the Prince of Coburg Gotha through your Eminence and this vividly reminds me of the affability and kindness which the Prince and his brother bestowed on me during their presence here in 1873. If you should write to His Highness in the near future, or meet the Prince again, I ask you to recommend me to the kindly further remembrance of His Highness with my respectfull greeting.
