My dear Baron

I am delighted to tell you that Prof Caruel is misinformed about Mr Bentham, who is alive & as well & active as ever — His memory as clear & mind as judicious.

See M to J. Hooker, 19 September 1881 (in this edition as 81-01-19a).

He works as steadily as ever at the Herbarium from 10 till 4 & has just read at the Linnean his splendid paper on the classification of .

Bentham (1882).

He has just concluded Bromeliaceae for Gen. Plant.

Bentham & Hooker (1862–83).

— & there is now little more than & to do. I am finishing the Palms, leaving the Australians in I fear a disgraceful state. I have undertaken the & when that is done I hope Gen. Plant will be concluded.
