On the verso of M’s letter there are notes, as follows, apparently unrelated to the letter, in what is probably Tate's hand, accompanied by a small sketch:
Annual with erect leafy stem 1'-18" Is [leaves?] radical long [ped.] pinnatifid & similar on scape. glandular hirsute Scape 1 [ped]. ray conspicuous white pappus small stellately radiate achene blunt angles crenate gibbous & sprinkled with hairs, apparently new.

Christmas/1880.
Have just received, dear Prof Tate, from my nephew Mr Edward Wehl (son of Dr Wehl) a specimen of from Lake Bonney.

Covering letter not found. There are two Lake Bonney locations in SA; Tate (1889a) records the species from 'Region G', 'the extreme south-east corner of this Colony', thus the specimen was collected from the lake near Millicent.
The plant is new for S.A., and this information may be in time for your census

Tate (1880).
or at all events for some supplemental notes.
4
The species is first recorded by Tate in Tate (1882b), p. 103.
With best wishes for the new year
