Dear Sir F von Mueller
I am in receipt of your note of the 3rd Inst.
With regard to the Eucalypt which you say is E. trachyphloia my specimens differ
from the description given of it in the
Flora
in the accuminate leaves and in the bark. I don't know the tree from the M'Kenzie
river as is noted in the Eucalyptus Atlas.
It is only found on the sandstone ranges near Rockhampton, and as it is very rare
as well as inaccessible, the timber has never been used for any purpose. The young
seedlings are similar to the adventitious shoots sent you, and my brother
informs me that these young sprouts and seedlings smell like the scented Gum. There
are but few fungi or mosses here, but should I find anything rare I shall send it.

E. trachyphloia occurred at the MacKenzie River, Qld.

John O'Shanesy.
I have at length satisfied regarding the
terra incognita
, the Drummond Range,
as I have just returned from there. I have been greatly dissappointed, as there is
scarcely anything botanically interesting there. But I have not been altogether unsuccessful,
as I found a Eucalypt there, which I enclose,
that I had not seen before. It is found only on the summit of the range.

There are neither Grass trees palms nor ferns at the part of the Range I searched,
and there are scarcely any scrubs.
Yours Faithfully
