Letter not found. The text is extracted from George Brown to Henry Rawlinson, 14 December 1876 (Royal Geographical Society, London, Archives, Journal Mss. Australia 1877, Brown, Revd Geo.). There is a copy in Brown’s letter-copy book 1876-80, A1686/3, Mitchell Library, State Library of New South Wales, Sydney. M's letter is dated to October 1876 as the earliest that it is likely to have been written. Brown left Sydney on his missionary journey in April 1875 and left the islands on 31 August 1876, returning to Sydney on 10 October 1876 (Sydney morning herald, 11 October 1876, p. 4).  Reports of his voyage appeared in the press in October (Sydney morning herald, 12 October 1876, p. 3, reprinted in Australasian [Melbourne], 21 October 1876, p. 3, and elsewhere). See also G. Brown (1877).
[In the course of correspondence with Baron von Mueller of Melbourne he kindly requested me to forward you a few Notes of our recent visit to Duke of York Group, New Ireland and New Britain.]
