I have the honor to inform you, that I am anxious, if you approve of it, to proceed
for a few days to the Upper Yarra Ranges, to institute there — so far as my present
state of health admits of it —, some observations in connection with my Departmental researches.

Francis approved the journey on 9 December and on 11 December M replied saying he
would leave that day. He returned to Melbourne six days later; see M to J. Francis,
