Sir
I have the honor to submit in first instance the byefollowing requisitions (just received) to you, as it does not appear that they have as yet been before yourself for any directions thereon. I have attached the form for your order to each of the new communications. I would respectfully suggest, that it would be quite sufficient and safe, to give kindly any approval under the restriction, that the supply should be rendered so far as fairly and reasonably available . By these means an enormous amount of work would be saved, not only to the botanic Gardens Office, but also to the Lands Department.
By these means will also be guarded against any misapprehensions, while, when finally dealing with the requisitions I shall learn in each case, whether the plants, asked for, are really adapted for the locality or means of any of the institutions. I should also be able to learn by interrogations, when the applicants come for their plants, how large a number, if available, can be placed on any area really prepared for the plants. It will also be easily understood, that while daily various orders, approved already, are in hands it is exceedingly difficult to say at any moments, whether particular plants are available, as every days distribution changes and lessens the stock of the nursery and as the people do call not for their plants at once after the approbation has been given; not to speak of the certainty, that very numerous applications will come in later in the season , for which according to the Directors experience and judgment plants should be reserved.
I have the honor to be, Sir, your obedient servant
Ferd. von Mueller,
Direct. botan. Garden
The honorable the President of the Board of Lands & Works
