Es mag Ihnen erinnerlich sein, edler Freund, dass ich im vorigen Jahr den Plan etwarf zu einer Entdeckungsreise von den central-australischen Telegraph Stationen nach den Quellen des Murchison-Flusses. Der muthige Giles unternahm die Reise, grossentheils aus seinen u meinen eignen Privatkosten . Hiermit sende ich in Skizzenform das erste Resultat dieser Expedition, die alsbald fortgesetzt wird u die 2 andere Expeditionen (unter Warburton u. Gosse) ins Leben rief. Das höchst inhaltsvolle Journal des ausgezeichneten Mannes, der soweit seine Arbeit trefflich durchführte, habe ich der Regierung Südaustraliens zur Veröffentlichung übersandt. Ob aber der Druck mit dieser Monatspost verschickt werden kann, steht zu bezweifeln. Mr Giles had mir das Privilegium überlassen, einige der neuen geographischen Localitäten mit Namen zu bezeichnen, u so ist auch Ihr edler Name dieser Karte dankbar aufgedruckt. Möchten Sie die Güte haben eine etwaige Copirung dieser Karte in Ihren Mittheilungen auch dem Herrn Baron Liebig, Grafen Zeil, Dr Sonder u Dr von Heuglin zugänglich zu machen.

Das nächste Vordringen nach Westen soll nach der Umgehung des Amadeus Lake von Mount Olga geschehen. Die beharrliche kühne u. geschickte Bekämpfung der Schwierigkeiten die wasserlosen Wüsten zu durchdringen erinnern an Sturt u Eyre.

You may remember, noble friend, that I drew up a plan last year for an exploring expedition from the Central Australian telegraph stations to the sources of the Murchison River. The courageous Giles made the expedition, financed largely by his and my own private means .

Ernests Giles's first expedition was financed by M and George Duff Gill, Giles’s brother-in-law who is commemorated by George Gills Range (see Giles (1875), p. 60).

Giles set out wetwards a second time from the Overland Telegraph Line on 4 August 1873.

and which resulted in two other expeditions (under Warburton and Gosse) being formed. I have sent the highly significant diary of the excellent man, who carried out his task in an admirable manner, to the South Australian Government for publication. However, it is doubtful whether the publication can be sent out with this month’s mail.

Giles's journal was made available to the press by the SA Commissioner of Crown Lands and long extracts were published in the Advertiser (Adelaide), 1 February 1873, p. 2, continued 3 February, p. 2. The complete journal was published in Melbourne; see Giles (1875).

Mr Giles has granted me the privilege of naming some of the new localities, and as a result your noble name has been printed on the map with gratitude. Would you have the kindness of making an eventual copy of this map available in your Mittheilungen, also to Baron Liebig, Count Zeil, Dr Sonder, and Dr von Heuglin.
