Stets haben Sie, edler Herr, einen so regen Antheil an Allem genommen, das auf Leichhardts Schicksal sich bezog, dass ich Ihnen gegenüber eine irrige Mittheilung aus letzter Zeit berichtigen möchte.
Wie Inspector Gilmour mir die vermeintlichen Ziegenhaar Zierrathen von Eyre's Creek brachte, sagte mir selbiger, dass solche in Brisbane sorgfältig verglichen wären. Ich war selbst zur Zeit sehr mit Geschäften bedrängt, und nahm ohne eigen Untersuchung die Mittheilung als eine richtige an. Nachdem ich nun aber selbst einen genauen Vergleich angestellt, finde ich, dass diese Riemen aus den Schweifenden des Perameles Lagotis bereitet sind. Der Beweis von Leichhardts Anwesenheit an Eyre’s Creek soweit solcher aus der vermeintlichen Auffindung von Spuren von Ziegen entnommen war, ist nun entkräftet.

Ich habe Briefe von Mr Giles aus dem Innern Südaustraliens. Zwar ist dort die Jahreszeit eine sehr trockne gewesen, indessen schreitet er rüstig vorwärts u ich zweifle nicht dass er sein Ziel, die Küste Westaustraliens in extratropischen Breiten, erreichen wird.
Beide Mr Forrest sind verhindert, in diesem Jahr wieder auszugehen, bereiten sich aber für eine neue Inland Reise für den Beginn von 1873 vor. Ich sende Ihnen mit der Buchpost eine neue Karte dieser Herrn.

You have always, noble Sir, taken such a lively interest in anything concerning the fate of Leichhardt that I would like to correct a mistaken recent communication.
When Inspector Gilmour brought me the artefacts from Eyre's Creek

supposedly made of goat's hair, he told me that they had undergone a careful comparison in Brisbane.

I myself was at the time heavily pressed with work and accepted the communication as correct without making a personal examination. But after having now made a careful comparison myself, I find that these straps were fashioned from the tail ends of the Perameles l agotis.

The Greater Bilby.
So the proof of Leichhardt's presence at Eyre's Creek, in as far as it was based on the alleged finding of traces of goats, is now invalidated.

Letters not found. The earliest letter written by Ernest Giles in 1872 that has been found is E. Giles to M, 12 July 1872.
from the interior of South Australia. Although the season has been a very dry one there, he pushes ahead vigorously and I have no doubt that he will attain his goal of reaching the coast of Western Australia in the extra-tropical latitudes.

have been unable to go into the field again this year but are preparing for a new expedition into the interior in the beginning of 1873. I am sending you a new map from these gentlemen
