MS annotation: 'Forwarded to Supt of Telegraphs in order that the suggested enquiries may be made as soon as they conveniently can but so as not to interfere with progress of telegraph work'. The Superintendent of Telegraphs, Charles Todd, was at this time in the north, supervising the construction of the Overland Telegraph Line, and an assistant from his office replied on his behalf: 'Mr G R McMinn, Overseer of Section E has received the necessary Authority to trace the sources of the Finke and return by way of Lake Eyre upon the completion of the Overland Tel Line'. On 1 February 1872 the new Chief Secretary, Henry Ayers, minuted: 'Inform Baron Von Mueller accordingly.' See also M to H. Ayers, 8 February 1872.
