MS written by Georg Luehmann and signed and addressed by M. MS annotated below the date: '1 May […]'.
24/4/71
Sir,
Allow me to inform you that I have just been requested by Dr Hermann Wagner the editor
of the Gotha Hof-Kalender,
to obtain for him some summary of statistic data, concerning the trade, Customs, postal
Service, telegraph Department, Census, railways, Volunteer force, mines, lands public
expenditure and income, and any other data in reference to your Colony.

See also M to J. Robertson, 17 March 1872 (in this edition as 72-03-17b).
As the Gotha Kalender is universally used in the diplomatic service, and also otherwise
much consulted all over the Globe, you may be pleased perhaps to accede to Dr Wagners
request, and if so forward kindly to him direct any documents bearing on the statistic
information desired — or entrust such documents to me for early transmission to Gotha.
I may add that the information required is only for 1870 and that the documents should
be forwarded by the May Mail.

'I may add … May Mail'
underlined in an unknown hand. MS annotated in an unknown hand, probably Robertson's: 'May be permitted as far as practicable. 2 May 71', and initialled on 3 May 1871. A minute in response follows: 'It has been ascertained that no part of the 1870 Statistical Register is yet in type
or even compiled. [8] May', to which Robertson(?) replied, 'May be so informed, but that when in print a copy shall be forwarded to him. 9 May
71'. The file was initialled again on 11 May 1871. A final annotation in another unknown
hand reads: 'Registrar General. Dr Mueller. 15. May 1871'. Letter to M not found.
I have the honor to be
Sir,
Your very obedient
Ferd. von Mueller
The honorable the Chief Secretary of N. S. Wales
