This money has been paid me under the following circumstances.
At the close of August 1870 Dr F. von Mueller forseeing the impracticability of retaining
my services owing to the reductions in his Department, secured said services for conducting
certain work in connection with the Industrial & Technological Museum: — he having
had a verbal understanding with members of the Commission of that institution that
remuneration for such services would be defrayed by the said Commission - in as much
however as these sums have up to the present date not been passed by them and as I
am on the eve of leaving the Colony, Dr. F. von Mueller has advanced the same to me.
I may add that my time from Sept. 1st 1870 to Nov. 7 1870 was exclusively employed
for the Industrial & Technological Museum.
Christian Hoffmann.
