Town Hall Melbourne
16th November 1870
Sir
The attention of the Officer of Health of the City of Melbourne and of the Inspector of Nuisances has been drawn to certain pits which have been dug near the summit of the hill in the reserve for the Governor's house and into which pits (two in number) the night soil from the Industrial School Princes Bridge is thrown and there left exposed or only covered in such a way as to cause the stuff to flow over and spread upon the surface of the ground adjacent.
As this is complained against as a nuisance I feel sure that it is only necessary to request your attention to the matter and that it will be prevented.
I have the honor to be
Sir
Your most obedient servant
E. G. FitzGibbon
Town Clerk
Dr Von Mueller C.M.G.
Director of the Botanical Gardens
