Es war mir angenehm, lieber Dr Haast, Ihren Freund Dr Fischer kennen zu lernen. Leider hat es meine Zeit bei den noch fortdauernenden Unannehmlichkeiten im Departement nicht erlaubt, ihm Aufmerksamkeit besonderer Art zu erweisen. Zudem haben mich die Verfolgungen und Missrepräsentationen hier ganz krank gemacht.

Gouverneur Weld schrieb mir, dass Ihnen eine temporäre Anstellung als Geologe in W. Austr angeboten sei. Ich denke mir kaum, dass Sie sich von dem Ihnen nun heimischen Neuseeland trennen werden, da jedenfalls die Mittel in West austral. bei der Armuth des Landes gering sein würden.

Governor Weld wrote to me,

that a temporary position as geologist in Western Australia had been offered to you. I hardly think, that you would want to leave New Zealand, which has now become your home, and also as the resources in Western Australia with the poverty of the country there would in any case be only small.
