Chief Secretary's Office
Melbourne 24th March 1870
Sir
By direction of the Chief Secretary I have the honor to forward you the enclosed letter addressed to Mr Ferguson
1
On 24 March, Odgers wrote to William Ferguson: 'Mr MacPherson desires me to observe that he considers your communication altogether objectionable in its tone and not such as should have been addressed by you to the Head of the Government. Moreover any representations you may desire to make to the Chief Secretary in regard to your official position should be transmitted through Dr Von Mueller who is the Head of your Department and from whom as your Superior it will be your duty to receive instructions. I am to add that it would be well for you to hold yourself in readiness to actively engage in the work of Inspection of Forests as soon as suitable weather sets in.' (No. 609, unit 19, p. 171, VPRS 1187, Public Record Office, Victoria).
and to request that you will be good enough to hand the same to him.
I am
Sir
Your most obedient servant
W. H. Odgers
Dr Von Mueller
