Sr Excellenz dem Ordenskanzlar v. Oertzen &c &c.
Excellenz
Es liegt mir die freudevolle Pflicht ob, Seiner Königlichen Hoheit dem edlen Herrscher des Landes meiner Jugend meinen tief gefühlten Dank auszusprechen für die höchst Huldreiche Auszeichnung, mich mit der ritterlichen Würde des Wenden-Ordens bekleidet zu sehen. Fünf andere Majestäten liessen sich Herab, den Fremdling in weiter Ferne durch Merkmale erhabener Huld zum Weiterforschen zu ermuntern. Für mich aber liegt ein überaus rührendes, ja eine unnennbar weniges Gefühl in dem Bewusstsein, dem schönen Staate, dem ich mein Dasein und meine erste Bildung schulde, dem Herrlichen und besonderen Vaterlande nicht entfremdet zu sein und jetzt durch das Grossherzogs Gnade als Würdenträger um so näher anzugehören.
Indem ich die ehrenvolle Weise anerkenne mit welcher Euer Excellenz das gnadenvolle Mandat unseres erhabenen Fürsten mir zur Kunde bringen und die prachtvollen Ordens Insignien übersandten, bitte ich noch, Seiner Königlichen Hoheit meine innige Bereitswilligkeit auszudrücken, den Männer des Wissens in Mecklenburg und namentilich dem verdienstvoller ehrwürdige Forscher Herrn Professor Roeper dienstbar zu sein, und so werde ich es mir auch zur ehrenvollen Pflicht anrechnen, die wissenschaftlichen Landes Institute, soweit ich's vermag, durch Beiträge von hier aus zu bereichern.
Mag es mir so gelingen meinen tiefen Dankgefühlen einen thatsächlichen Ausdruck zu geben

The joyful obligation is incumbent upon me to express my deep-felt thanks to His Royal Highness the noble ruler of the country of my youth for the gracious mark of honour that sees me bestowed with the knightly dignity of the Wendish Order.

M already had knighthoods from Austria, Denmark, France, Italy and Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.
However, for me an extremely touching, indeed an inexpressibly delightful feeling lies in the consciousness of not being alienated from the beautiful state to which I owe my existence and my first education, the magnificent and special fatherland, and now through the Grand-ducal grace to belong all the closer as bearer of honour.
Whilst acknowledging the noble manner with which Your Excellency brought the gracious mandate of our exalted prince to my notice and sent the splendid insignia of the order,

I ask in addition to express to His Royal Highness my sincere willingness to be serviceable to men of science in Mecklenburg and especially to the meritiorious noble researcher Professor Roeper, and so I will also consider myself honourably bound to enlarge the scientific institutes of the country, as far I am able to do it, through contributions from here.
May I be successful in giving my deep gratitude an actual expression.
