Ich schreibe nur, theuerer Dr Haast, einige flüchtige Zeilen, um zu erfragen ob es Ihnen möglich sei mir ein paar gute fruchttragende Zweige des Rewa Rewa Baumes ( excelsa) senden zu können. Freilich kommt derselbe nur in der Nord-Insel vor, indessen da der Baum dort sehr verbreitet ist, möchte es nicht schwer sein, meinen Wunsch zu erfüllen durch die Vermittlung eines Ihrer Freunde. Ich bin gern dankbar u kann Ihrer Gemahlin Pflanzen senden, wenn Sie mir sagen wollen, was ihr lieb ist. Die Früchte der müssten aber ganz reif sein. Ich habe ein Proteaceen Genus von der Ostküste, das sehr nahe steht u daher möchte ich gern die N. Seeland Pflanze vergleichen. R Browns Beschreibung, so auch die von Jos Hooker & Meisner sind für meine Zwecke unzulänglich u so auch die Abbildung in den transact of the Linn. Society. Im Herbarium habe ich nur blühende Exemplare aus der Hand des Dr Sinclair.

In dem 36 Hefte der Fragmenta werden Sie u Gleichenia Hermanni als Neuseeländische Pflanzen aufgezählt finden.

I am only writing a few hurried lines, dear Dr Haast, to enquire whether it would be possible for you to send me a few fruiting branches of the Rewa Rewa tree ( excelsa).

It is true that it is only found in the North Island. However, as the tree is very widely distributed there, it should not be difficult to meet my wish with the help of one of your friends. I shall be happy to show my gratitude and can send plants for your wife, if you will let me know what she likes. The fruit of the must be completely ripe, though. I have a genus in the from the east coast that is very close to , and for that reason I should like to compare it to the New Zealand plant. Robert Brown's description, as well as those of Joseph Hooker and Meisner, are inadequate for my purposes, as is the illustration in the Transactions of the Linnean Society.

I have only flowering specimens in the herbarium from Dr Sinclair.

M received New Zealand collections from Dr Andrew Sinclair through the Steetz herbarium; see Short & Sinkora (1988). M may also have received plants from Sinclair directly; see M to J. Haast, 12 May 1861, in this edition as 61-05-12a.

You will find and enumerated as New Zealand plants in part 36 of the Fragmenta.
