Sir

My father Dr Lindley a few day's ago began a letter to you, which I am sorry to say he is not able to finish, but which I enclose. You will see by it, that he is desirous of offering his herbarium, exclusive of his Orchids (which he has sold to Kew) and also his botanical Library to the Government of Victoria.

The Herbarium is probably known to you but if not Dr Hooker or Mr Bentham can give you full information concerning it. It has been most carefully formed by my father during the last 40 years and he has neglected no opportunity of adding to it and spared no pains to make it as serviceable as possible to a working Botanist. It is particularly rich in Australian plants, and is in most excellent condition.

The botanical library has been formed with equal care and contains most of the English, French, German & American publications of any real value, which have appeared during the last 40 years. The collection of botanical tracts is I believe very valuable, all the books are in excellent condition, a list accompanies this communication.

The price at which my father is advised to offer his herbarium and library together is £1500. This sum does not however include the cost of packing or removal. It would probably cost at least £40. or £50 to pack them properly in tin cases and get them on board ship at one or other of the Docks in London.

If my dear Sir you would be kind enough to use your powerful influence with the Government of Victoria & induce them to purchase the herbarium & library you would be doing Dr Lindley a great service, for which he would be extremely grateful.

Not having the pleasure of being personally acquainted with you I should have asked Dr Hooker to write to you on this subject, which he would I know gladly have done, but I am sorry to say he is extremely ill with Rheumatic fever and is unable to attend to any thing. He has requested me to inform you of this circumstance and to state, that he would otherwise have written to you and communicated to you the sad news of the sudden death of his father which took place about a month ago.

The death of Sir Will. Hooker and the inability of my father to prosecute his favorite pursuits will I am sure be received as sad news not only by yourself but by all who like you are distinguished & zealous labourers in the field in which they have worked so long.
