Mein theuerer Freund.

Es war meine Absicht, Ihnen früher zu schreiben, aber da ich den Brief mit der Schrift über die Chatham Pflanzen begleiten wollte, konnte ich es erst heute thun, da sich das Binden der Abhandlung so lange verzog. Ich habe sogar im Augenblick nicht einmal ein 2tes Exemplar für die phil. Gesellsch, der Sie so würdig vorstehen u ich werde dasselbe erst senden können wenn Travers die Anzahl seiner Exemplare erhält. Mittlerweile sende ich aber doch ein paar Moosplatten für die Gesellschaft.

Ich habe über Ihren Wunsch bezüglich auf eine Anerkennung für Sie von Seiten Frankreichs nachgedacht aber noch nicht meinen Weg klar gesehen wie ich Ihnen augenblicklich nützen kann. Es bedarf meiner Versicherung nicht, dass ich keine Gelegenheit versäumen werde Ihnen in der Angelegenheit nützlich zu sein. Vielleicht komme ich eines Tages selbst nach Paris u könnte dann die Sache eher fördern.

Übrigens sollte ich denken dass Sie eher Ihre Ansprüche an ihr eigenes Vaterland geltend machen könnten.

Hoffentlich sind Sie mit der kleinen Schrift über die Chatham Inseln zufrieden. Es ist mehr Arbeit darin versenkt als es im ersten Augenblick erscheint. Sie können ja später Dr Hooker's Notizen vergleichen u Ihre eignen Schlüsse ziehen.

It was my intention to write to you sooner but, as I wanted the letter to accompany the paper on the Chatham plants,

I was not able to do so until today, as the binding of the publication was delayed for so long. At the moment I do not even have a second copy for the Philosophical Society over which you preside so worthily, and I can only send that when Travers receives the number of his copies. But in the meantime I am sending a few plates of mosses for the Society.

I have thought about your wish concerning an honour for you from France,

but have not yet been able to see my way clear to be of use to you at present. It should not require my assurance, that I shall not neglect any opportunity to be of service to you in the matter. Perhaps I will get to Paris myself one day and could then more easily advance your cause.

I should think, by the way, that you ought to have more chance by making your claim on your own fatherland.

I hope you are satisfied with the little pamphlet about the Chatham Islands. More work has gone into that, than would appear on first glance. You can compare it later with Dr Hooker's notes
