Verehrter Herr Professor.

Mit dem berühmten Schiffe "Great Britain" werde ich innerhalb der nächsten Tage eine ziemlich grosse Kiste an Sie absenden, enthaltend hauptsächlich kraus getrocknete unpräparirte Seetange. Diese möchten Sie doch zum Theil interessiren u für Tauschgaben willkommen sein. Diejenigen Algen, welche an der Portland Bay gesammelt wurden, sind die ersten von diesem Standort, welche je nach Europa gesandt wurden, da Professor Harvey diese Bucht nicht besuchte.

Da vielfache Dubletten in dieser Sammlung enthalten sind, ist es vielleicht nicht zu unbescheiden wenn ich Sie freundlichst bitte, eine kleine Sammlung derselben an unsere Freunde Harvey, Sonder, Decaisne, Lenormand, Fenzl senden zu wollen, sollte es überhaupt Ihrer Mühe Werth sein, diese Pflanzen präpariren zu lassen. Es befindet sich dann noch in der Kiste eine kleine Menge von Phanerogamen u eine ähnliche Gabe für Hr Prof Anderson, auch etwas Harz von für Ihr Museum.

Wenn Ihnen daran liegt, diese einfach in der Luft getrockneten Algen auch in Zukunft zu erhalten, so werde ich gern weitere liefern. Leider ist mir die Musse so beschnitten, dass ich selbige nicht präpariren kann. Aus der St Vincent Bay sind mir eine Menge Algen in Aussicht gestellt, welche ich Ihnen demnächst senden werde.

Der Rehder der Great Britain hat diese Kiste gütigst auf die Freiliste gesetzt, so dass keine Unkosten bis Liverpool aus dem Transport entstehen werden.

Die Herren Betham & Blackith of Coxs Quay, London, werden dann die Weitersendung an Sie vermitteln. Vielleicht wäre es gut wenn Sie sich mit dieser Firma in Verbindung setzen. Der Great Britain wird Liverpool vermuthlich Ende März erreichen.

Ich habe der Sendung noch ein Päckchen südafrikanischer Algen zugefügt, welche Dr Pappe sammelte und mir aus dem Nachlass unseres Freundes Steetz zukamen. Möchten Sie selbige präpariren lassen u mir für mein Staatsmuseum 1 Exemplar dieser südafrikanischen Arten retouriren?

I shall dispatch to you a fairly large case by the famous ship Great Britain within the next few days, containing mainly roughly dried unprepared seaweeds. These might interest you at least in part and be welcome for exchange purposes. Those algae that were collected at Portland Bay are the first from this locality ever to have been sent to Europe, as Professor Harvey did not visit this Bay.

Seeing there are many duplicates in this collection, it may perhaps not be too immodest, if I were to ask you kindly, whether you would send a small collection of them to our friends Harvey, Sonder, Decaisne, Lenormand, and Fenzl, provided it is worth your while to have the plants prepared at all. The case contains furthermore a small number of phanerogams and a similar gift for Professor Anderson,

also some resin from for your Museum.

If you are interested to obtain such simply air dried algae also in future, I will be happy to supply more of them. Unfortunately my leisure time is so restricted, that I can not prepare them myself. A large quantity of algae from St Vincent's Gulf has been promised to me, and I shall send them to you soon.

The shipping company of the Great Britain has been so kind to put this case on their free list, so that as far as Liverpool no expenses are incurred for the transport.

Messrs Betham & Blackitt of Cox's Quay, London, will then arrange for the forwarding to you. It would perhaps be good, if you were to contact this firm. Great Britain is expected to reach Liverpool probably by the end of March.

I have added a small packet of South African algae to the consignment, which were collected by Dr Pappe and came to me from the estate of our friend Steetz.
