The undersigned Imperial Ambassador has been requested to transmit to the University
Professor and Director of the botanical Gardens Dr Ferdinand Mueller the enclosed
Knight Cross of the Order of Franz Joseph, which has been graciously awarded to him
by His Majesty the Emperor, as an acknowledgement of his scientific merits.
Dr. Ferdinand Mueller is hereby requested to sign and to remit the Revers, which accompanies
the Usual Decret of Notification.

M wrote to the Governor asking permission to wear the decoration (M to C. Darling,
12 October 1863 [in this edition as 63-10-12a]). Darling wrote to the Secretary of State for the Colonies, Edward Cardwell, on
2 February 1864 (in this edition as M64-02-22) pointing out anomalies in the regulations.
His arguments were not supported (see notes to M64-02-22).
