Innigen Glückwunsch zur wohlerrungenen Doctorwürde! und dann auch zu Ihrer Heirath.

In Allem schwebt mir der grosse Humboldt, den wohl wenig Sterbliche folgt in Einzelheiten u niemand in seiner ganzen Grösse erreichen wird, als Vorbild vor, nur nicht darin, dass er ohne Familienkreis blieb; u. darin gedenke ich unserm grossen Landsmann nicht nachzuahmen, so dass ich, trotz meiner 37 Jahre, nach meiner Rückkehr von Europa mir auch eine Häuslichkeit zu gründen gedenke.

Aber welch eine Entdeckung haben Sie gemacht in Ihrem Engpass durch die Alpen! Auf eine solche Errungenschaft können Sie wahrhaft stolz sein.

Innigen Dank für die in Aussicht gestellte weitere Beisteuer zu unsern Sammlungen. Ich will J. Hooker gern das Ganze überlassen zu bearbeiten; aber sollten Sie, Theuerster, während meiner 8 oder 12 monatlichen Abwesenheit in Europa je Chatham Pflanzen sammeln lassen, so bitte ich inständig mir das Monopol derselben zu reserviren.

Haast received an honorary PhD from the University of Tübingen, Württemberg, in October 1862, probably through Ferdinand Hochstetter who was a native of Württemberg. See H. von Haast (1948) p. 230.

and also on your marriage.

Haast married Mary Dobson on 25 June 1863.

In all things the great Humboldt has ever been my idol — though few will follow him in all the details of his life, and none will reach his greatness — in all things but one, that he remained without a family circle, and in that I do not intend to imitate him. In spite of my 37 years, I also intend to settle down to family life on return from Europe.

But what a discovery you have made in the narrow pass through your alps!

Of such an achievement you can indeed be proud.

Sincere thanks for the prospect of further contributions to our collections. I will be happy to leave the lot to Joseph Hooker to work on; but, dearest friend, should you at any time have collections made in the Chatham Islands during my absence of 8 or 12 months in Europe, I beseech you earnestly to reserve the monopoly on them for me.
