18. Dec 1862.
Sir
I have the honor to solicit, that you will be pleased to issue authority for the liquidation
of a debt of fourteen pounds fifteen shillings Sterling (£14.15/—.) incurred by this
establishment for the maintenance of our botanical collector
on board of the "Victoria" in 1861. The above sum was at the return of the Victoria
passed under your special authority (N.453), but payment was subsequently stopped
by the desire of the mess officers of the Victoria, in order to prevent G. L. Morton,
the original claimant to draw the amount. The amount was then paid for W. Hull Esq
to Alex Thomson Esq on the 11. Aug. 1862 and repaid on the same day to the credit
of the original vote, it being transferred in first instance from the vote of publication
of plants for 1861. The amount being no longer available under authority N.453, I
have the honor to solicit, that a new number of special of authority for the liquidation
of this sum may be granted in order that the present claimants of the mess officers
may draw the amount.

I have the honor to be,
Sir,
your most obedient & humble servant
Ferd. Mueller

On 30 December Under Secretary, J. Moore, minuted: 'Commander Norman will oblige by
causing an account to be at once prepared for this amount. A portion of the amount
when received by the Mess Committee must be handed over to Dr Mueller. £12:5/. I believe
is his claim'. Norman responded on 5 January: 'The account has been prepared and will
be dealt with so as to get the matter settled as stated'. Moore informed M on 6 January:
'Dr Mueller will perceive that the money is a course of payment to him.' M replied
on 20 January: 'Gratefully returned'.
