I estimate, that the outlay in labor for providing water by manual labour for the
whole ground of the garden with the present means available amounts now to about £275
- - per annum; but if more fund could be spared for the purpose, a much more extensive
application of the water would be effected; at present, for instance, no water is
available for irrigation and this for our extensive area could only be brought cheaply
within our reach by gravitation.
In reference to Mr Dallachy's engagement, I would beg to recommend, that the usual
payment given to our former collectors may be granted to him, vize £3 - - pr. week,
out of which he will have to bear his personal travelling expenses. I would deem it
advisable, that Mr Dallachys services should not be engaged for any lengthened prefixed
period, but continued merely so long as the result of his labours is satisfactory.
His payments would be made out of the ordinary wages fund of the botanic Garden.
Ferd. Mueller.
