Ich bin im Besitz des Abdrucks Ihrer geistreichen Rede, welche Sie bei der Eröffnungsfeierlichkeit Ihrer gelehrten Gesellschaft gehalten. Sie haben in meisterhafter Weise eine grosse Fülle von local für Sie oder allgemein wichtigen wissenschaftlichen Fragen bewältigt u auf eine sehr beredte u hoffnungsvolle Weise die Bahn des künftigen Wirkens Ihrer Gesellschaft vorgezeichnet. Unter einen solchen Präsident wie dem Ihren kann es nicht anders sein, als dass Ihr Verein einen glorreichen Aufschwung nehme. Möge Ihnen Leben, Gesundheit u geistige Kraft beschieden bleiben, um Ihre schönen Pläne in dem schönen Lande zu verwirklichen.
Unsern Tribut von Anerkennung werde ich Ihnen nun doch bald, wenn auch etwas verspätet zollen.
In letzter allgemeiner Versammlung unserer königl Gesellschaft schlug ich Sie zum Ehrenmitglied vor u sprach über Ihr Wirken u über Ihre wohl-verdiente Ehrenstellung dort u über die Dienste die Sie unserer königl Gesellschaft bereits geleistet u hoffentlich auch auf die Zukunft ausdehnen würden. Form gemäss wird zur wirklichen Wahl 3 Wochen später geschritten.
Sie sind so freundlich mich um meine effigies zu bitten. Ich habe gerade keins zur Hand, doch will ich mir die Freude nicht versagen zu wissen dass ich in Ihr Album gehöre u Ihnen demnächst meine bildtragende Karte senden.
Von Hr Travers hatte ich gleichzeitig ein Schreiben, besonders in Bezug auf die N. Z.

Ich sehe mit inniger Freude der Ankunft Ihrer Pflanzensammlung entgegen u sage Ihnen für dies werthvolle Geschenk, welches ich in dem öffentl. Museum meiner Anstalt niederlegen werde, meinen innigen Dank.

I have received the reprint of your ingenious speech, which you gave at the inaugural celebrations of your learned Society.

Philosophical Institute of Canterbury. Haast had called a preliminary meeting on 24 July 1862, proposing the forming of the Institute. The inaugural meeting was held 30 August 1862 and Haast was elected President. He gave the inaugural speech at a Society dinner on 30 September 1862.
You have covered in masterly fashion a great wealth of scientific questions both of local interest for you and of general importance, and have traced out in an eloquent and hope-filled manner the course for the future activities of your Society. Under such a President as you it cannot be otherwise, than that your Society will receive a glorious impetus. May you be granted life, good health and mental vigour to realise your splendid plans in your fair country.
I shall render you our tribute of approbation soon, even if a little belated.
In the last general meeting of our Royal Society I proposed you as honorary member and spoke about your work, and about your well-earned respected position, and about the services you have already rendered our Royal Society and which you would, we hope, also extend into the future. According to the rules the actual election will be held three weeks later.

M nominated Haast for election as an Honorary Member of the Royal Society of Victoria at its meeting on 20 October 1862. He was elected at the following meeting, on 17 November 1862.
You are so kind to ask me for my likeness. I have none available at present, but will not deny myself the pleasure to know I belong in your album, and will shortly send you a card with my photograph.

I am looking forward to the arrival of your plant collections with joyful anticipation, and thank you sincerely for this valuable gift, which I shall deposit in the public Museum of my institute.
