Letter not found. For the text given here, see 'Wichtige Nachrichten über E. Vogel's
Schicksal' [Important news on E. Vogel's fate], Germania (Melbourne), No. 101, 12 December 1862, p. 433. M sent Petermann's letter with the
attached copy of the report from Munzinger to the editor of Germania, who published both. The report, continued in the following issue, gave unofficial
news of Vogel's death.
Gotha, 22. August 1862.
A. Petermann,
Secretär des Comité's der Expeditionen
nach Wadai.
The following is a verbatim copy of a letter, arrived by today's mail, from Mr Werner
Munzinger from El Obeid, the capital of Cordofan,
dated 23 June 1862, who, together with his companion, Mr Th. Kinzelbach, did his
best to obtain reliable information on the fate of Vogel. However definite this may
be considered already now, the two travellers will none the less continue their enquiries
and attempt to penetrate to Darfar and Wadai themselves. The same applies to Mr von
Beurmann's expedition.
