The Government Storekeeper wrote to the Chief Secretary, R. Heales, on 4 January 1861:
'I have the honor to forward for your information copy of a letter addressed to me
by the Honorary Secretary to the Exploration Committee, in reference to the rationing
of the Indian in charge of the Camels at the Royal Park, and to request that I may
be authorised to supply food on a regulated ration to this man and forage to the Camels.
A small stock of food has been issued but I do not feel at liberty to continue supplying
without authority.' (S61/170, unit 749, VPRS 1189, Public Record Office, Victoria).
25 Jan 1861.
Sir
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of some papers relative to the scale of
rations required for the Camels & their attendant, and in reply I beg to inform you,
that I shall not fail to lay them for their opinion before the Gentlemen of the zoological
Committee at the next meeting (on the first of Febr. 1861.)
I have the honor to be,
Sir,
your most obedient servant
Ferd. Mueller.
