C. B. Phipps, Treasurer to Prince Albert, submitted on the request of the Secretary
of State for the Colonies a copy of M's Fragmenta phytographiae australiae, vol. 1, to the Prince Consort for his acceptance, and informed C. S. Fortescue,
Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies, on 21 June 1860 that he had been 'commanded
to request that you will cause to be conveyed to Dr Muller the expression of His Royal
Highness' thanks to him for his Book'. The original of the request is at the National
Archives, London, CO 309/53, f. 379; a copy of Phipps's letter was sent on 13 July
1860 to the Governor of Victoria, H. Barkly, who when he received it instructed Timins
to write to M (No. 45, unit 13, VPRS 1087, Public Record Office, Victoria). The covering
letter in the despatch to Barkly also informed him that copies of M's book had been
sent, as requested, to the British Museum and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
Sir,
I am directed by the Governor to send you a copy of a letter from Sir Charles Phipps,
conveying the thanks of H.R.H. the Prince Consort for the work forwarded by His Excellency
to His Royal Highness, at your request, in February last.
I have &c
(sd) O. F. Timins
P. Secy.
