Hobart Town
Col. Sec's Office
14 June 1860
Sir,
I take the occasion to address you thus early on receipt of the intelligence of the unfortunate loss of the Salmon Ova,
1
See M to W. Henty, 12 June 1860.
& before receiving any report from Mr Black or from yourself from an understanding that the latter is about probably to quit Melbourne for Sidney, and would beg to suggest the advisability, if agreeable to him that he should pay a Visit to the spot we have selected & the preparations that have been made for the reception of the Ova.
The Government will of course be happy to undertake the cost of all expenses incurred in the visit.
The suggestion however is made under correction of your judgement for perhaps Mr Rowbotham or some other gentleman might be found more disposed or suitable for the office, & if you will be good enough to act as you think best should you find any person sufficiently at leisure & qualified to comment on our proceedings here we shall feel obliged by your requesting the favor of his services.

We had arranged for sending some Ice by the City of Hobart this day but for the news of the failure — on my next occasion for writing I propose to introduce some more extended observations on the work of importation & climatizing these & other objects of natural History which I hope may not be deemed out of place
I have the honor to be
Sir
your obedient Servant
