On 17 April 1856 the Chief Secretary of SA forwarded a letter from the Chairman of
the Adelaide Botanic Gardens Committee requesting information about the Melbourne
Botanic Gardens and an exchange of seed. The letter was passed to the Public Works
Department on 28 April 1856 (No. 3351, vol. 1857 V, VPRS 1186, PROV).
On 18 June the following year the President of the Board of Land and Works, D. Moore,
forwarded to the Chief Secretary, W. Haines, 'a package containing eighty six varieties
of plants, from the Botanic Gardens, Melbourne. I have also to forward replies to
the enquiries contained in the letter of the Chairman of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens
Committee, together with a catalogue of Plants &c under cultivation here [B57.13.07].
I may mention that the delay which has occurred in replying to the communication under
notice arose in consequence of it being necessary that the Catalogue should be revised,
previous to being printed, by the Government Botanist, for which purpose it was withheld
until that officers return from his tour in Northern Australia.' (B57/4434, unit 861,
VPRS 1189, PROV). The Under Secretary, J. Moore, forwarded the package of seeds, the replies to questions
and the catalogue of plants to Adelaide on 30 June 1857 (No. 1305, unit 1, p. 463,
VPRS 1187, PROV).
On 30 July 1857 the Chief Secretary, SA informed Haines that the Superintendent of
the Adelaide Botanic Gardens, G. Francis, would be forwarding a parcel containing
85 varieties of South African seeds to M (A57/5560, unit 861, VPRS 1189, PROV). On
29 July, M wrote to Francis acknowledging receipt of the package.
