Sir,
Referring to former correspondence that has passed between yourself & the Sur: Genl,
I have now the honor, by that officer's directions, to enclose a number of the S.
A. Govts Gazette containing copys of a report by the Assist: Sur: Genl relative to
the country traversed by him between the settled Districts of this Colony and Lake
Torrens.

Goyder (1857).
I am further directed to inform you that it is intended to despatch a small exploring
party — about nine in number, to prosecute further researches in the interior — This
party will start from Adelaide about
the 23rd Inst
and is expected to be absent about three months — it will be under the command of
Cap: Freeling the Surveyor General, to whom it has occurred that you might possibly
be glad to form one of the party — Should this be the case, I beg to inform you, that
all necessary equipments & rations will be supplied to you; and I am further to state
that it will afford Cap: Freeling much pleasure to be accompanied by a gentleman of
such well-known scientific attainments as yourself; though he regrets that the only
inducements he can offer you is the chances that may present themselves of your obtaining
additional information relative to the Science in which you are more peculiarly interested
I have &c.
