Letter not found. The text given here is from 'Thistles', in a report of the meeting of the Colac Shire Council held on 17 January 1894, Colac herald, 19 January 1894, p. 3. The letter would have been M's report on the specimens sent by Sydenham.
[ Mr Sydenham, thistle i n spector , rep orted that fair progress was bein g made in cutting the ordinary th istles, an d most p laces where they had been forward they were now receiving attention. D uring the month he forwarded specimens to t he Government botanist of three kinds of thistles.

His doubts had been raised as to whether the one known locally as the " Star," and which had beco me such a pest in the northern portion of the shire, were correctly described. His dou b ts were confirmed by the official report, which classifie d it as the "Shore Th istle." The o ther kinds which were comparatively rare, were the safro n thistle, which grows in Kerr's lane leading to Wallace's crossing, and the Star thistle, of which he had only discovered three plants in the shire. ]
