The letter is dated to September 1882 based upon the location of the letter in the archive: it is filed between letters dated 22 August and 20 September 1882. J. Ednie Brown and Tate arrived in Mt Gambier on 13 November 1882 during their visit to the south-east of the colony that is mentioned in the letter (Border watch, 18 November 1882, p. 2).
Your letter just to hand dear Prof Tate.

Would advise to spend the time for collecting rather more northerly in your eastern territory, unless Mr Brown is bound to go your intended course on account of Forest-duties. The line by the Tattiara-country as far as Mt Gambier

I travelled in 1848 also in October and Nov., and as it will lead you mainly through grassy country, it cannot afford you much novelty. The Sandy Scrub-Country more northerly would yield much more of new or rare plants; and as it was hardly accessible anywhere at my time, it would be new ground for you.
There will be no delay through me in the rivisal

Then, I suppose, you intend to add finally the results of the forthcoming and also of your Christmas trip.

See n. 1 above for the 'forthcoming' trip. Tate's planned 'Christmas trip' was to Kangaroo Island, SA; see M to J. Stirling, 25 December 1882 (in this edition as 82-12-25a).

is interesting.
I am glad, that the forest stations will become centres of bot. collecting.
Sheet O is somewhat delayed, as I am waiting for Mr Fitzgeralds part 7.

Sheet O of B83.03.04 comprised pp. 105-12 and included the beginning of the Orchideae. M was waiting for vol. 1, part 7 of R. Fitzgerald (1875-94), issued in October 1882.
In confidence I must however tell you, that I felt not justified to insert from part 1-6 more that 10 sp. out of nearly 30. It is a pity that he almost spoils his gorgeous work by the nomenclature.
He describes lately 4 new Thelymitras and 2 Caladenias in the Gard. Chronicle

as found during his short stay last Nov or Dec in S.A . How is that possible, after all our previous exertions? His T. rubra is T. Mackibbini. But please give our excellent friend and collaborator no offence.

I see my way clear, unless I fall ill or some thing very unforeseen occurs, in getting the whole Vasculares through the press in 1882.

B83.03.04. Although the title page is dated 1882, the volume was published in March 1883.
With best wishes for your welfare and success
Ferd. von Mueller.
Localities of the new sp. for S.A. I will add where required.
