Letter not found. Kirkland was honorary secretary of the Victorian Horticultural Improvement Society. This letter was read at the committee meeting held on 6 October 1881.
[A letter was received from Baron von Mueller regretting that he was unable to comply with the request of the Society in re making a donation of his works for the Library:

Kirkland had been 'directed to apply to Dr Mueller Government Botanist for the balance of his works' at the meeting of the Committee held on 8 September 1881.
and suggesting the advisability of the Society applying to the Hon J. M. Grant — Chief Secretary as the most likely source of getting the supply. He however expressed his pleasure in being able to forward two works issued by him as a private speculation. The books were "Index Perfectus Ad. Caroli Linnæi Species Plantarum." and "The Organic Constituents of Plants and Vegetable Substances."

B80.04.04, B78.06.09. Kirkland was instructed to forward the Committee's thanks to M, and also to apply to the Chief Secretary as suggested. The Committee resolved to elect M an honorary member of the Society. The minutes of the committee meeting held on 3 November 1881 recorded that the Chief Secretary had sent the Society M's Fragmenta, volumes 6-10, Botanic teachings [B77.08.01], Select plants [B76.12.04] and Eucalyptographia, decades 1-7 [B79.13.11, B80.13.14].
