MS annotation by Petermann: 'Erh. 4. Sept. 1878' [Received 4 September 1878]. The
letter is dated to early July 1878 as the latest possible date on which it could have
been sent, to reach Gotha by early September. For a published version of this letter,
see Voigt (1996), p. 134.

Ferd. von Mueller.
You could easily fulfil the desire of Mr Young,
dear Professor, by having him admitted, as companion of Giles
& Tietkens in the third journey and as the astronomer and principle collector, into
some scientific society. You will find his address in the last volume of the R. G.
S.
of London.

See J. Young to M, 14 August 1877, in which he sought recognition for his exploring activities in Australia. M's note to Petermann is written on the back of Young's letter.
