I was agreeably surprised, dear Prof. Henriques, when I learned from your letter of the 26 March

and the accompanying Diploma, that the "Instituto de Coimbra" had done me the high honor of electing me one of its corresponding members

M had been elected more than a year earlier. See Society of the Institute of Coimbra to M, 27 March 1872, and J. Henriques to M, 26 March 1873 (in this edition as 73-03-26b) in which Henriques apologises for not informing M sooner of his having been elected.

I beg to assure you and your learned confreres, that I value this honor very highly and that I will endeavour with such means as are at my command to be an active cooperator with them.

I shall be most happy to continue in communication with the Coimbra University and especially with its botanic Garden. Not being quite well, you must kindly excuse it, when I answer to your friendly communication so briefly on this occasion.
