N otice . — No plants, cuttings, or seeds will be issued from these Gardens unless in exchange, or for public institutions or benevolent purposes.

A. Wallis minuted: 'As Mr Hughes requires these plants for test-culture, I think they should not be supplied unless a report of their adaptability or otherwise to the Taradale district is subsequently transmitted to the Dept of Agriculture by that gentleman.' On 18 June 1873, C. Hodgkinson added: 'I concur in this suggestion', and the Minister, James Casey, initialled the file on the same day. A letter was sent accordingly, presumably to Hughes, on 24 June.
