[Plan of Giles Exploration Tel Line requesting]
2
Following Ernest Giles's return from the first of his exploring expeditions west of the Overland Telegraph Line, M, who had largely funded the expedition, transmitted Giles's journal and sketch map to the SA Government (see M to H. Ayres, 16 January 1873). He also sent a copy of the map to August Petermann (M to A. Petermann, 28 January 1873 (in this edition as 73-01-28d)), who promptly published it in his journal (Petermann's geographische Mittheilungen, vol. 19, 1873; digitized copy available through National Library of Australia, http://nla.gov.au/nla.obj-232432495 ). M evidently expected that the SA Government would also have published the map, but it appears not to have done so.
