24/4/70.
Sir
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 20 inst and beg
to assure the town council of Warnambool,
that I will be very happy to supply as far as I can for the bot Garden in your town
plants from the nurseries of my establishment.

i.e. Warrnambool.
The plan, submitted to me, leaves me however quite in uncertainty as regards the
extent of ground
trenched
or otherwise prepared for the reception of the plants. Perhaps the gardener would
send a rough sketch when ever the ground is ready, in order that the requisite exact
number of trees, of shrubs &c may be selected.
It would be well if all you arrangements were perfected during the early part of May
or at all events during that month.
Very obediently
Ferd. von Mueller. M.D.
Director bot Garden

M's letter was received at a Council meeting on 26 April 1870. Commenting on M's enquiries
about the preparation of ground, the Mayor. C. Cramer, said that none of it was trenched
and that he did not think trenching was necessary. The meeting agreed to acknowledge
M's letter with thanks and inform him 'that any plants the Council received from him
would be properly attended to.' (Minute book 7, p. 130; Warrnambool examiner, 29 April 1870, p. 4). See H. Read to M, 4 May 1870.
