Your excellent son,
1
William Guilfoyle.
dear Mr Guilfoyle, having lately returned from the S. Sea Islands so loaded with treasures, it occurred to me, that possibly in some instances you might have far more spare plants than you could dispose of.
2
See M to W. Guilfoyle, 27 January 1869, and Guilfoyle (1869).
If so I should be very glad to effect interchanges & could offer many rare American Pines, American Oaks, Walnuts, Hickories, Himalaian Pines, Mediterranean Oaks &c. I could also send you Mauritius fern tree-plants two feet high.
3
M to W. Guilfoyle, 21 April 1869 (in this edition as 69-04-21a), acknowledges receipt of some Pacific Island plants collected during Guilfoyle's journey, and mentions sending some unnamed orchids received from the Philippines.
Any thing from the S. Sea Islands, collected as valuable by your son, would be welcome. No doubt he brought a host of ferns in a growing state, as they travel so well.
With regardful salutation
Ferd von Mueller
My great distribution takes place already in April. So our interchanges should be made before.
